Brad Steinmetz has designed for a diverse group of theatres including Denison University (as the Vail Artist-in-Residence), Chicago’s Redmoon Theater, The Virginia Arts Festival, and The Red Herring Theatre Ensemble. His designs employ unconventional materials, unique scenic movements, and a mix of high and low technology.

In 2003, Steinmetz was one of sixteen graduate designers in the U.S. invited to showcase his work at the USITT Young Designers’ Forum. That same year, he was honored at the national conference with the prestigious Rose Brand Award for excellence in Scene Design.

Steinmetz’s design work has been influenced by his travels to Cuba, England, and the Czech Republic, as well as by his collaborations with scenographers Jaroslav Malina and Marketa Trosterova-Fantova. His work has also been shaped by his internships at The Royal Court Theatre in London and the Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago.

His research interests include puppetry and performance objects, projections, non-traditional materials and techniques, and Czech scenography. Steinmetz is an active member of the Union Internationale de la Marionnette and the United States Institute for Theatre Technology. He is also a founding member of the for/word company.

He has been published in Puppetry International and in USITT’s Theatre Technology Catalog. His design work has also been showcased in Stage Directions Magazine, Theatre Design and Technology, and in the exhibition catalog World Stage Design.

Steinmetz is currently adjunct faculty at the University of Oregon in Eugene where he teaches design and technology.
